For most of us, our house is the largest investment that we will make in our lives. It is an important decision. It should be. If we choose wisely and take care of this investment, it will earn us a very attractive return. But a house is much more than an investment. It's where our kids play and where our families will gather to celebrate with one another. It's where we eat and sleep and where we seek solace after long days. It's our shelter. It's home.

Your home's performance is central to its investment value, its comfort and its healthiness. You should make improvements to your home that not only maximize the return on your investment, but also improve your home's comfort, durability and indoor air quality. If you haven't tested your home, then you don't know. If you are a new homeowner that wants peace of mind that your new home is performing as advertised, it is wise to have your home tested. If you live in an older home that is drafty and subject to temperature swings, then an Energy Audit can save you money and stop the constant battle with your thermostat. If you are building a new home or remodeling a home as an investment, adding energy efficient features will make your home more attractive and a Home Energy Rating will guarantee the efficiency to prospective buyers. Or maybe you just want to save the world some burnt coal. An energy efficient home is the best place to start.

Utility bills and the comfort of your home are options and YOU have a choice. You can make many improvements on your home that are basic and are completed by you. If you are building a home, ask your contractor for an Energy Star Home.

Building Performance Solutions offers on-site home performance testing that includes:

Safety – If there are any combustion appliances (water heater, furnace, etc.) that are atmospherically vented, BPS will ensure that they are not producing a significant amount of carbon monoxide into the home in a worst case scenario (back drafting).

Durability – How the home is removing moisture from the building in the main moisture producing areas (bathrooms, kitchens, saunas, etc.).

Comfort & Energy Efficiency – A thorough analysis of how the building performs thermally and how much air infiltration/leakage it has.

To determine the above information BPS uses a blower door, infrared camera, exhaust fan flow meter, carbon monoxide reader, and other diagnostic equipment.

BPS will walk the homeowner/customer through the entire process answering questions and giving advice. It is very important to look at the home as an entire system, because making one change can  affect how another part of the home will perform.

There may also be Cash-Back Rewards available to homeowners for making improvements. Please check out http://www.focusonenergy.org for participating utilities.
